WAGS had a visit this morning from a concerned customer who had been advised by their veterinarian to put their dog on Hill’s Science Diet R/D to lose weight.   The dog didn’t like the product and the cost was high for what it really is.  Here are the listed ingredients.  A customer recently referred to these types of diets as “Monsanto Food”.RD

Whole Grain Corn, Corn Gluten Meal, Chicken By-Product Meal, Powdered Cellulose, Soybean Meal, Soybean Mill Run, Chicken Liver Flavor, Dried Beet Pulp, Pork Liver Flavor, Soybean Oil, Lactic Acid, Caramel color, Pork Fat, DL-Methionine, L-Lysine, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Iodized Salt, vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of Vitamin C), Niacin Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Biotin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Calcium Carbonate, minerals (Manganese Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Taurine, L-Carnitine, Mixed Tocopherols for freshness, Natural Flavors , Beta-Carotene

If you went to YOUR doctor and he “prescribed” a diet containing these ingredients, I am sure you would be looking for a new doctor.  Yet we accept this less than desirable advice from our veterinarians.

I would argue that the dog is much better off eating a proper MEAT based, grain free food.  Although the calorie content of the R/D is lower, the feeding requirements are much higher and those calories are coming from plant based ingredients that are not easily digested by the dog.  By simply feeding the proper amount for the weight the dog SHOULD be at, the dog will slowly and safely lose the necessary weight.  Make certain that you are not following up with a bunch of biscuits, but instead a highly digestible and usable meat treat.

Here at WAGS we have a variety of great choices that will enable a dog, when fed proper amounts, to lose the weight safely and steadily.

On 8/1/16, we drove 1 1/4 hrs from Western Ma to make some purchases & hope to see Susan, Kenny`s assistant & dog trainer. Susan spent well over an hour giving us pointers on how to manage our 5 month old PWD, Brewster. She was so helpful & between her & Kenny ( Wags owner ) we had some good laughs & very pleasant experience. We will be heading back from time to time for supplies & would highly recommend this store for your pet needs. And for Susan, we would highly recommend employing her for any training issues you have. She was wonderful. Thank you again, Susan!
